Whatever Wednesday

Hump Day again.

  • It got cold here in South Texas.  A balmy 60 degrees cold.  And yep that's cold for these parts for this time of year.
  • It's also been rainy.  We didn't get rain all Summer and lately it's been falling in buckets.  But if you planned ahead you installed your rain barrels to catch the rain that falls of your roof.  We have two rain barrels and they are both completely full.
  • I think I would be entering a whole other realm if I starting ordering food from etsy but look at these yummy yummies.  I just love all things pumpkin.  I wanna buy one of everything from her shop.  Maybe it's the cold weather but I was this close to clicking buy.
  • I had lunch with Vienne yesterday at school.  She cried.  Sigh.
  • I found out this week that the 3rd graders teacher rewards the kiddos with m&ms, candy bars, and soda.  Hmmm.  I will be discussing that with the teacher at our parent conference on Friday.  How could any kid say no to candy bars?
  • Two of the best iphone apps that I discovered this week are Best Camera and Shake It Photo.  Worth the few bucks you have to pay for each.  Gotta say that they are almost as good as carrying your point and shoot.
  • I love Fall.  I even have a cute new sweater to wear.  But Fall to me means we are heading straight into allergy season.  Yuck.
  • I found out that there is a farmer's market not too far away.  I'm hoping to go this Saturday.  We have one in our small town but it usually only has three stands.  We live in a really small town.

  •  This is called a spigot and not a spicket.  But you smarty pants probably already knew that.

  •   Some interesting facts about rain barrels:

Rain barrels can save approximately 1,300 gallons of water during peak summer months.  The roof on a typical house can capture approximately 26417.2 gallons of water a year.  Rain water is chlorine free.  You can buy rain barrels already made to be rain barrels.  Or you can do what we did- we bought old wine barrels and converted them.  You can use the rain water that you harvested to water gardens, plants, and if you are hard core you can bring the water inside for other household chores.  Easy to install.  I mean, so I hear.  The Hubs is very handy.

OK, I'm off.  Does anyone else get anxious when the house is totally empty and the tv is off?  I can't relax.

Love this! What a fantastic idea.

Your rain barrel is much prettier than ones I usually see. We would actually need gutters first before we acquire a rain barrel, but I like that idea.

Sorry to hear that V is still adjusting. :(

Isn't this weather awesome?! LOVING it! I love your rain barrels, too. But rewarding kids with candy bars and soda? Ummm, not cool!

Beautiful rain barrels. Much better than the blue industrial looking ones. My little girl and one of my boys was just like V...I know it's hard for you, but it gets better, I promise.
Um, what happened to stickers and little junky Oriental Trading Co. toys as rewards??? Sorry, but candy and soda doesn't fly.

The Australians have perfected the art of collecting rain water. Out of necessity ! These tanks are not as beautiful as yours but they can hold a ****load of water!!!! Mum and Dad have three or four different kinds. Sorry to hear V is still unsettled. Did she cry ALL the way through lunch :-) As for teachers rewarding kids with candy :-(. I did not approve until I taught teenagers. It is ALL they respond to :-D

Oh, your rain barrel is so very pretty looking! Way nicer than the 50gal drum ones!
Pumpkin treats...that is as good as it gets and a sure sign that fall is on the way (since we can't rely on the weather to tell us here - it was 100 again yesterday!). But, mmmm....I want some pumpkin things now.
Our teacher has a "treasure box" that is filled with little things like jump ropes, the little ball-in-hole games, etc...all that little stuff that gets played with for about 20 seconds and then clogs up our playroom. But I have to admit it is way better than candy and soda! I'm kinda shocked that is what she does.
Poor V. That just breaks my heart.
And I do feel the same thing with an empty house...I kind of wander from room to room with no direction. It is very strange.
I'm off to check out the iphone apps...thanks for the hint.

would it be weird to call those rain barrels "pretty?" all the ones around here are green plastic, so those are lovely. also, agree with you on those sandwich cookies. yum.

Wow - I am really surprised that they hand out junk food at school. I mean REALLY surprised. Didnt they used to give out pencils, erasers, stickers and things of that sort? Love the rain barrels too. They have so much charachter to them and good for you for reusing the water. I like the yellow flowers in the first shot and the dof in the last. Funny how a water barrel can look so "pretty". :0)

I LOVE this idea. I saw a demo of one these at our local hardware store. Here in the PNW though, I dunno...off my roof, during the winter, I could probably supply you guys in Texas for a bit. :D
